Follow our journey, a family from Scotland, who have become committed Finnoholics- and who travel each year to the beautiful country of Finland, where we enjoy summer holidays in a special kind of paradise!
DFDS ferry
We have used the DFDS ferry service from the UK to the Netherlands several times now, and this year, we'll travel on the King of Scandinavia boat, as we have done before. It's a big boat, but not particularly modern, having been built in the late 1980s. For those who only travel between the UK and mainland Europe, it might appear to be a fine ship, but if you have travelled into Sweden or Finland before, you'll know that there are much more luxurious and pleasant ships to use... See below!
FinnLines ferry
From Travemunde to Helsinki, we are sailing on the FinnLines service. We used this in 2010, and though it's not cheap, the boat, cabins and whole experience of being on a FinnLines boat is an absolute pleasure! The cabins are wonderfully spacious, and you can relax in the included sauna and sunbathe on the adjacent deck as you head up or down the Baltic Sea.
It's a good question! Especially for those who haven't visited this hidden gem! In 2006, we stumbled upon Finland almost by fate, after my planned trip to St Petersburg in Russia by car from Scotland had to be abandoned because of the ridiculous stance taken by the Russian consulate here in Scotland. They refused to allow my wife, a Russian citizen, to enter Russia using her British passport, despite having authorised it on two previous occasions.
This meant that we had to rethink our holiday plans, and, having already booked all our ferry travel, we decided to stay in Finland. This decision proved to be one of the best we have ever made!
Thus started a love-affair with this tranquil and beautiful land, as we discovered a country that doesn't take itself too seriously, but that can provide a family on holiday with endless amounts of fun and activities, at surprisingly reasonable prices. Take a look for yourself at what Finland can offer- by browsing the VisitFinland website!
To get from Scotland to mainland Europe, we use the Danish ferry company, DFDS, who sail from Newcastle in England to Ijmuiden, close to Amsterdam in the Netherlands.
Finnlines ferry
We will travel once again into Finland by using the excellent FinnLines ferry service from Travemunde in Germany.
Tallink Superfast ferry
Although we don't use this service, it's also possible to arrive in Finland from Germany by using the Tallink Superfast service from Rostock.
