Day 1- Wednesday 6th July

An excited Olivia, en route to the first ferry!

The big day had arrived, and we were ready to set off for our holiday once again to Finland. We left home at around 12.30pm, and headed down the A1 road to Newcastle, where we boarded the DFDS ferry at around 3pm, ready for departure at 5pm, bound for Ijmuiden in the Netherlands.

Waiting to board at Newcastle.
The DFDS boat was fairly busy, though not as busy as we have seen it on previous occasions, but we were looking forward to the trip more than usual, as we had for the first time booked ourselves into a better than normal Commodore cabin. Well, the cabin was better than we have experienced on previous trips on this boat, more spacious certainly, but it still falls a bit short of what other Scandinavian ferries can offer. Nonetheless, we definitely did enjoy the buffet dinner very much, as we have always done, and ate until we could eat no more! Did I sleep any better than on earlier trips on the King of Scandinavia? No, to be honest, I didn't- so I don't know how to improve this part of the journey any more! Anyway, we arrived in a state of high excitement the next morning in the Netherlands, ready to carry on our journey across Europe to Finland :-)
After a visit to the Kids' Club!

DFDS ferry

To get from Scotland to mainland Europe, we use the Danish ferry company, DFDS, who sail from Newcastle in England to Ijmuiden, close to Amsterdam in the Netherlands.

Finnlines ferry

We will travel once again into Finland by using the excellent FinnLines ferry service from Travemunde in Germany.

Tallink Superfast ferry

Although we don't use this service, it's also possible to arrive in Finland from Germany by using the Tallink Superfast service from Rostock.
